Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day and I ventured out to Trout Lake to participate in the festivities. There was a delightful mix of entertainment, food, story telling, homemade goods, and community to stay engaged for hours. When I first arrived there were drummers on the stage that captivated everyone in the park- some people were even inspired to dance along to the drumming.
As I wondered around, I found a delightful market where Indigenous vendors were selling hand made goods such as jewellery, bath products, bedding, art work, hair products, books, and more. I could have spent a lot more money than is wise with so many beautiful choices!
Near the lake people could participate in canoeing across the lake. There were many excited children lined up for their turn!
Overall, this event was a lovely celebration that brought the community together to practice and participate in Indigenous traditions. I can definitely see the benefit of bringing a school class to this event in the future to give them a wonderful experience celebrating and witnessing the Indigenous values they are learning in the classroom.
