Indigenous Peoples' Day

Today I had the great fortune to be given the day off to participate in the Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrations at Trout Lake. I started the day by meeting up with some of my fellow CFE students at a cozy café in the nearby Cedar Cottage neighborhood. We then followed Solare as she guided us through some community gardens and even a small orchard (who knew?) along the way to Trout Lake. I was interested to see some tall garlic scapes that were opening up, as well as some inventive garden tools and décor in the Cedar Cottage community garden.

Once we arrived at Trout Lake, I was excited to see the large turnout of people who gathered to celebrate. A Mr. Bannock food truck was generously giving out the most delicious bannock, by donation. We then listened to the opening words of a member of the Squamish nation and watched him lead an eagle dance for some enthusiastic children of diverse cultural backgrounds. After listening to some more amazing music, I went to check out some of the art and chose some cool cedar earrings made by a local indigenous artist. I was grateful to be a part of today's celebrations, and look forward to someday taking a class to the Trout Lake celebrations for Indigenous Peoples' Day!
