Today we had the pleasure and honour of visiting the celebration at Trout Lake for Indigenous Peoples Day. We enjoyed seeing the diversity of attendees and participants and the energy of beating drums, harmonizing voices, and hopeful words from members in the community.
One of the greatest take-aways was seeing all of the youthful faces in the crowds. As we navigate through Truth and Reconciliation in Canada and British Columbia it is quite moving to see how many students there were and how engaged they were during the performances. There was such a high energy and excitement bursting as children were invited to come and join dancers on stage. This brings us great joy as a future teacher to see how we can incorporate and celebrate Indigenous principles in our classes.
Being able to participate and witness this coming together of diverse communities and canoes was such a positive experience. We walk away thinking of the words spoken, “we are not telling you who to be but sharing who we are”. These words serve as powerful reminder of how we can respect, honour, and move forward as a nation.
