Gentle tidings and many salutations!
My name is Alex, the loudest sneezer in the "Allergy Brigade." We had an absolutely wonderful day in the Garden today. As you can see, all smiles no frowns in the pictures below.
The one and only Susan started our day off with the following three prompts:
1. What are your stories about the outdoors, gardens, human-made places...?
2. What do you hope to take away from this CFE (Community Field Experience)?
3. How do you expect this might influence your philosophy of teaching and learning?
We were tasked to mull these over and discuss our answers in order to learn about each other, where we come from, and how we interact with the land. This was a wonderful way to spend the morning as we all had the opportunity to get to know each other more and where we come from.
Afterwards, Susan established the concept of "sit spaces," these are places where people go and return to in order to have a period of reflection and notice the surroundings. As you return to this place again and again you notice more things, and how they change over time. This is something that I do in my own personal life, I didn't know it had a name to it! From here we were tasked to listen to the sounds around us and make a sound scape on paper. We did this for about 20 minutes and then returned to talk about the things we noticed at each of our spaces. Many of us picked up on the human-made noises that dominated the space and the minute gentle sounds of the nature like wind, hummingbirds, or more sneezing.
After our lunch we finished our day with some gardening chores. We weeded, tilled, and planted seeds in two beds. Some nice onions, shallots, radishes, and carrots will be gracing the garden in the future!
