June 18: Norma Rose Point Visit, Into the Thick of It

This Tuesday, we had a fun trip to Norma Rose Point Elementary School. We knew that we were going to explore their wonderful rain garden and do a fun activity with some students, so we were plenty excited.

Our visit began with very a helpful grade 5 student who played a significant role in maintaining the rain garden. She answered our many questions, setting the stage for our tour of the garden. And oh boy did we get into the thick of it!!

One of the highlights of our visit was one of our Teacher Candidates, Danielle, reading the book Water Protectors with the students. The story sparked conversations about the importance of environmental stewardship. Then we did our creative activity of making Clay Garden Guardians. This fun project combined art and nature as we crafted small, protective creatures meant to watch over the garden. These guardians, made of clay, are designed to eventually break down and return to the Earth.

After reflecting on our creations, we carefully placed our guardians along the pathways of the rain garden. It was heartwarming to see these little fellows in their new home. Check out some photos of these charming creatures below.

We concluded our day by heading back to the Orchard Garden for some hands-on gardening. Overall, our day at Norma Rose Point Elementary was filled with fun, learning, and meaningful reflections.

Thanks for reading!

Dominic
