It was a beautiful day in the garden. Today we learned all about math and measurement using bodies, spaces and technology. We could see how much children would really enjoy these activities, measuring trees, plants and vegetables. We measured onion flowers using our body parts such as fingers lengths, branches with the palms of our hands and garden rows with our strides to name a few. We then discovered measuring angles with our arms starting with a 90 degree angle, spacing the angles with our fists. These are wonderful ideas to engage children with math and gardening.
We were introduced to the sundial along with great stories of Mayan mathematics, walking with the elders and the dance of the corn farmers. It was interesting to learn how the gate was made with straight lines and built with a curve. We tried out pin hole cameras and look forward to making some in the future. It was a busy morning filled with blessings from eagles and a hawk. Homemade bread was shared with a delicious peach jam and we had a little visitor Nina who was the custest little helper. We seen lots of worms and prepared two garden beds and planted some blueberry and raspberry bushes along with medicinal plants. It was a great day with beautiful weather.
