Ecopoetry Workshop - By Kate and Tammy

A rainy day is always a special day! Today, we stepped away from the Orchard Garden and returned to our home base at the Scarfe Building. We started our day by introducing our names and sharing what we love about rain. Some of us love the fresh smell of rain, while others enjoy the harmonic sound. Next, Susan explained the difference between nature poetry and ecopoetry. Then we enjoyed a discussion about ecopoetry and tried our hand at it outside.

Poetry inspired by nature, poetry that sees ourselves as inextricably linked to nature and a part of it. We braved the weather, and visited lovely areas adjacent to the Scarfe building, pausing to look, listen and feel. The rain somehow added to the experience, waking up the senses and reminding us that we belong to this beautiful world.

Here is an awesome poem shared by Shelby Henry after our visit around the Scarfe building.

Next time you have a moment, step outside with a paper and pencil, and sit still somewhere near or in nature. Use your senses to help you be present and really notice what is going on around you - from the snail eating a leaf, to the wind rustling the leaves, to the call of a bird. There is inspiration and beauty all around us!

Here is another lovely poem composed by Kate.
